100 Year Old American Walnut Tree And Walnut Tree Wood This summer we decided that we were tired of having walnuts fall on our heads, the dogs head, the pool. We were tired of stepping on them, our feet rolling out from under us, raking, slipping, and hauling them to the trash in heaps. This went on for many years. I walked out to look at the dog, and he appeared to have a headache. And he wouldn't come out of his dog house. I don't blame him at all. Poor puppy, dodging walnuts all day long . . . Understand, we loved this tree (aside from the hazards of falling nuts) It was a supreme shade tree, and woodpeckers, and all kinds of wildlife would nest in it. It was there when we moved in, and was a regular fixture. At the time of it's cutting, it was a full eighty (80) feet tall, and at least 100 years old. Yes, an actual living antique. (hence it's presence here on the website) But the nuts . . . All those nuts . . . We decided to cut it down. After about two weeks, we had all the limbs cut off, cut them into lengths 18 to 20 inches long, and stacked all but the biggest in our side yard. Beautiful wood. And I know walnut because my father was a woodworker, and he made some gorgeous lamps and furniture from it. The 26 foot tall stump was left with its roots in the ground still standing. We felt like tree killers, which we surely were. But it was preferable to getting killed ourselves one day by nuts falling from 80 foot in the air. Talk about acceleration. POW that would hurt. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THE WALNUT STUMP Circumference: 9 and 1/2 feet around Height: 26 feet Age: 100 years plus NOTE: Has not been felled yet, but will cut tree down whenever item is paid for and date of pickup is arranged. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THE LIMBS AND EXTRA WOOD The limbs were removed from the walnut tree and cut into 18 to 20 inch lengths, which vary from 8 inches to 18 inches in diameter. They can be used for woodworking, or for firewood, depending upon your tastes. I have been told that it is one of the longest burning woods there is due to the oil content of the wood. These will be sold together or separately from the main trunk, depending upon purchase terms agreed upon at the time of the sale. |
TERMS OF THIS SALE Buyer must pay through PayPal before tree is cut and transferred to them. When payment clears and is posted to PayPal then we will make arrangements for the tree to be cut down and it can be picked up at the site. We do not have equipment to move this item or ship to buyer. The mover must be equipped and capable to remove a tree trunk of this size through an 11.5 foot gate without damaging anything on or around the property. Removal must be assisted and supervised by the property owner. Price can be discussed, depending on your preference of whether the tree is removed with: Trunk intact including base stump/root, (this entails some digging), or cut at ground level. |
